Underneath the enamel and hard dentin surface of your tooth is a substance called pulp.
When a tooth gets chipped, cracked, or has a deep cavity, the pulp becomes exposed to bacteria. Bacteria multiplies quickly and, before you know it, you’ve got an infected tooth.

A root canal is a dental procedure that involves removing infected pulp and disinfecting the inside of the tooth. It’s the best way to keep your natural tooth, stop pain, and restore your smile.

The process for a root canal is similar to a standard filling. Treatment can often be completed in one office visit, but sometimes we may need to treat the infection over multiple appointments.
This is the typical process you can expect from our root canal dentist:

1. Topical numbing agents and local anesthetic are applied to the affected area.

2. The infected pulp is carefully cleaned out from the tooth.

3. Antibiotics are applied to the inside of the tooth to treat the infection and stop reinfection from occurring.

4. The tooth is filled with a sealing paste and either a permanent filling or a crown is placed on the tooth.

Immediately following the root canal treatment, you can expect your mouth to be numb for a few hours. Avoid eating during this time so that the tongue, cheeks, and repaired tooth are protected from accidental damage.
