Surgical Extraction -

Extractions are carried out either by a dentist or an oral surgeon. It is a simple in clinic procedure, which is carried out using a local anaesthesia given in the concerned area.

Teeth that are grossly decayed or submerged below the gums or rather which are impacted requires a surgical method of extraction. Visible teeth are comparatively easier to extract.

Why is there a need to remove one's teeth?

There are various reasons for teeth removal. It can be due to:

  •  Grossly carious tooth
  •  Excessive tooth infection
  • Recurrent infection due to wisdom tooth
  • In case of orthodontic treatment, where there is crowding or as recommended by your dentist. It makes space for the other teeth to be aligned in space.
  • Incase of patient's undergoing chemotherapy, compromised teeth need to be removed

Preparations for tooth extraction -

Firstly the patient should give a complete history of his medical conditions or incase if he is on any medications. Conditions such as :

  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid abnormality
  • Heart diseases
  • Liver diseases
  • Kidney related problems
  • Joint disorders
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Compromised immunity
  • Previous history of bacterial endocarditis

This history will give your dentist a basic knowledge in relation to these conditions, if they are stable before you undergo the tooth extraction.

Before undergoing any surgical procedure it is mandatory to take an X ray of the concern tooth/teeth. Do not forget to mention about any medications you take, as well as vitamins, supplements, and over-the-counter drugs to your dentist.

Incase if you are or will be consuming bisphosphonates intravenously, do inform your dentist regarding the same. Consuming bisphosphonates after the extraction might cause osteonecrosis ( bone death), so you might have to delay it’s consumption.

Coming towards the procedure of surgical extraction, your dentist will administer a local anaesthesia to numb the area of concern.

Before starting with the procedure, the concerned area is checked whether the effect of anesthesia has been acted, to ensure the procedure is PAIN FREE.

Incase where the tooth is impacted, a very small incision is given on the gums to expose the tooth. Using his skills and experience the dentist or the oral surgeon will extract the tooth and will close the incision using sutures.
In usual conditions, non resorbable sutures are given. The patient is advised to visit the dentist after a week for a check up and to cut off the sutures as well.

The patient will be prescribed with medications that includes pain killer and antibiotics.

Recovery Period and Post Extraction Instructions -

It takes around few days to weeks for the recovery depending upon the amount of infection or bone loss and immunity. Below mentioned post extraction instructions will lead to smother recovery if followed correctly.

  • After the procedure, you need to directly apply an ice pack to your cheek. Repeat it after every 20 minutes.
