Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic treatment helps to enhance one’s facial appearance by straightening and positioning the teeth. Not only this treatment enhances the facial appearance, it drastically improves the functioning of teeth as well.
It benefits the oral cavity by increasing the health of your teeth, gums, bone, joints of the jaw and equalising the bitting pressure of the teeth.
The Need For Orthodontic Treatment –
- Most of the people have either crowded or spaces in the teeth. In such cases cleaning of the oral cavity becomes a task especially in cases of crowded teeth. This will eventually lead to cavity formation, plaque and tartar accumulation.
- In a condition where one’s teeth are jutting out, the appearance can be unpleasant.
- There comes situation where one’s teeth do not correctly meet each other. In such instances, they will cause pressure on the muscles and jaw joints and sometimes lead to headache.

HOW IS THE ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT DONE?
There are 3 methods of treatments can be carried out.
1. Fixed Appliance
This is used in cases where teeth needs to be moved and guided in an accurate position.
Brackets are attached to the teeth, which is joined by a wire. This can be removed after the treatment is completed by an orthodontist.
There are 3 types of brackets:
A. Metal
B. Ceramic
2. Removable Appliance
Those devices which can be inserted and removed by the patient.
3. Functional Appliance
This is usually done in adolescent age group individuals, as it enhances the growth of jaws. It is done with the help of muscle force.
What are 'Invisible Braces'?
Clear alignments are orthodontic devices that are transparent, thermoplastic form of dental braces used to adjust the position of teeth.
Special sets are made which is customised according to every individual. These sets are changed after every 2 weeks and should be worn for atleast 22 – 23 hours in a day for best results. It can be easily cleaned using soap and water.
One can easily take them off during eating, drinking and brushing. It should be kept away from heat.
Duration of Orthodontic Treatment
No specific time can be mentioned as the duration depends on the severity of the problem. Though, it can vary from few months to 2 and a half years.
Average time is usually between 1- 2 years.
