Teeth whitening
Teeth whitening or teeth bleaching is the process of lightening the color of the teeth. Whitening is often desirable when teeth becomes discoloured, stained or yellowish over time for a number of reasons.
Teeth discolouration and staining is primarily due to two sources of stain :
- Intrinsic
- Extrinsic
Intrinsic stains :
Intrinsic stains are stains which are caused due to internal discolouration of the teeth. The factors causing it are trauma to the teeth; enamel developmental anomalies, use of antibiotics such as tetracycline in childhood.
Extrinsic stains :
Extrinsic staining are stains which are on the layer of the teeth. It is due to environmental factors such as smoking, consumption of tobacco, consumption of aerated beverages and foods and metals such as iron or copper.
Does whitening damage teeth?
The answer is no. While there may sometimes be side effects such as sentsitivity, whitening treatment is safe on tooth enamel.
What is the most effective way to whiten teeth?
In-office bleaching provides the quickest way to whiten teeth. With in-office bleaching, the whitening product is applied directly to the teeth. These products are used in combination with a special light, or a laser. Results are seen in 30- to 60-minute treatment.
How long does whitening last?
The effects of teeth whitening can last up to 2-3 years or as little as 6 months. It varies from person to person. Some habits can stain you teeth quickly such as smoking, tobacco, intake of caffeine such as tea or coffee.
